Women’s upliftment is an important aspect of India’s social and economic development. Therefore, the Government of India is running various groundbreaking projects for women empowerment. These programs aim to promote women’s safety, education, financial inclusion, employment, entrepreneurship, digital literacy, remedial education and participation in decision-making in various sectors.
These government projects are not limited to one area; rather they cover women at different stages of life and offer financial assistance, skill development, self-help groups, legal support, childcare, and livelihood opportunities. This blog is dedicated to government projects on women’s empowerment in India that are strengthening the country socially and economically.
“Strong women build strong families, communities, and a stronger nation.”
Some of the major government projects include Mission Shakti, Lakhpati Didi, Namo Drone Didi, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, and women-focused initiatives under DAY-NRLM. All these are great initiatives that successfully address various concerns such as safety, economic independence, entrepreneurship, skill development, financial inclusion etc.
Mission Shakti is a major government programme that mainly focuses on women’s safety, security, and empowerment. Its Samarthya parts include Shakti Sadan, Sakhi Niwas, PMMVY, Palna, and SANKALP. Under the programme One Stop Centres are available to support women facing violence and other challenges. Women Helpline ensures providing guidance when needed. According to Government data, as of January 2026, more than 1.11 crore women had got assistance through One Stop Centres and the Women Helpline.
The Lakhpati Didi initiative is part of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana National Rural Livelihoods Mission. It aims to change the financial condition of village women who are members of Self-Help Groups.
The primary aim of this initiative is to assist self help group women so they can earn a stable income to regularly support their family and also contribute to the country's economy by earning at least ₹1 lakh per year. According to government data, around 3.46 crore SHG members had become Lakhpati Didis by July 2026 and the scheme brought positive change to their lives.
The Namo Drone Didi Scheme connects women to modern agricultural techniques. The e programme provides services such as spraying fertilizers and pesticides to farmers and selected women also receive support from the authority to access agricultural drones.
Government data claims that around 1,094 drones had been distributed to SHGs by January 2026, with women members receiving training as drone pilots. The scheme aims to empower women to participate in modern agriculture.
Financial independence is another important part of women’s empowerment. Here, pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana plays a significant role since it provides loans to women without security. According to 2026 government estimates, more than 57.79 crore loans had been sanctioned to eligible women entrepreneurs.
The scheme supports women to start and expand their businesses. The scheme provides loans without security to women who are associated with fields such as trading, services, manufacturing, and agriculture-related activities.
SANKALP Hub for Empowerment of Women acts as an information supportive mechanism under Mission Shakti. It aims to diminish the information gap among women by giving women access to learn about various government schemes, different services and benefits.
This is an important scheme because having easy access to a government scheme is extremely useful when eligible women know about it and understand how to access its benefits.
Running goal oriented Government projects are significant to empower women financially, academically, and socially. The programme must aim to overcome societal challenges that women frequently encounter in different fields such as education, employment, business, financial inclusion, safety, and social participation.
In 2026, many government initiatives are encouraging women to become more independent.
Each programme helps women to become entrepreneurs, workers, self-help group members, and contribute to the country’s economy.
For students, these projects offer a useful example of how government policies can help address social and economic challenges. For women and families, understanding women’s empowerment schemes in India can help them find programmes that may suit their needs and provide access to education, skills, financial support, employment, and other opportunities.
The Government of India has introduced several schemes to support women’s safety, financial independence, entrepreneurship, employment, and social participation. From Mission Shakti to Lakhpati Didi and DAY-NRLM, all these schemes are great examples of the government’s efforts towards women’s empowerment. These programmes provide assistance to women in various ways, including financial assistance, skill development, digital skills, market opportunities, safety and leadership participation.
However, before applying for any scheme or programme women should check eligibility criteria and benefits because each scheme differs from another. Women should carefully read the latest official guidelines and requirements before applying for any government scheme.
